SAN DIEGO IS WHERE CALIFORNIA WINE BEGAN
San Diego is where California wine began. San Diego was the first area in California where vineyards were planted and wine produced dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries when the Franciscans worked in the San Diego Missions. San Diego is a great place to grow grapes with our Mediterranean climate of hot days, cool nights and coastal breezes. San Diego is rich in micro-climates which allows the opportunity to grow unique and varied varietal grapes. There are 60 varieties of grapes grown in San Diego County.
There are 115 wineries in San Diego and many new urban wineries bringing grapes from the country to make wine in the city. San Diego has both young and old vineyards, traditionalists, and many new-wave winemakers.
